Cover Up Tattoos

If you are looking to hide or alter an old or unwanted tattoo, there are important considerations. Your existing tattoo can limit what’s possible to tattoo over it. The tattoo images below are some examples of my cover up tattoos.

Skilled artists employ various methods for cover ups, including bold linework, selective shading, and the use of darker color pigments. Black, grey, green, and blue are effective choices for covering old tattoo work. Subject matter with texture, dimension, and darker elements; such as flowers, dark art, or creatures (real or fictional), work well.

Keep in mind that more challenging cover-ups may appear darker than typical tattoos. Chris Moniz is a leading tattoo cover up artist in Calgary!

Cover Up Tattoos

Not every tattoo is meant to last forever. Maybe it’s a design that didn’t age well, a name that no longer belongs, or a piece that just wasn’t done right. Whatever the reason, a cover-up tattoo lets you turn an old mistake into something fresh, bold, and completely new.

I specialize in custom cover-ups that don’t just hide old ink—they transform it. A great cover-up doesn’t look like a cover-up; it looks like it was meant to be there from the start. With the right design, shading, and colour work, we can completely rework an unwanted tattoo into a piece you’ll be proud to wear.

How A Cover Up Tattoo Works

Every cover-up is unique, but here’s what you can expect:

  • Smart Design – A good cover-up isn’t just about making the old tattoo disappear; it’s about designing something that flows naturally with your body and new ink.
  • Colour & Contrast – Darker shades help mask old ink, but that doesn’t mean you’re limited to black. With the right balance of contrast, saturation, and highlights, we can build a fresh, vibrant piece.
  • Size & Placement – Most cover-ups will be larger than the original tattoo to ensure full coverage and smooth blending. The extra space allows for better detail and a more natural-looking result.
  • Optional Lightening – In some cases, a few sessions of laser lightening can fade an old tattoo enough to allow for more design flexibility. This isn’t always necessary, but it can help achieve the best outcome.
